Mount Tsukuba: A Famous Peak Overlooking the Kanto Plain

Mount Tsukuba(筑波山) is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, located in Ibaraki Prefecture. From its summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Kanto Plain. The mountain is known for its two peaks, Nantai-san (Male Peak) and Nyotai-san (Female Peak), and has long been revered as a sacred mountain. It is also home to Tsukubanyan, a popular cat mascot whose head is inspired by the mountain’s distinctive twin peaks. In addition, Mount Tsukuba is well known for its association with the gama (toad). Legends and cultural traditions related to the toad have been passed down for generations, and the mountain is especially famous for the story of the “Gama Oil Seller,” which dates back to the Edo period. With a ropeway and cable car providing easy access, Mount Tsukuba is a popular tourist destination that can be enjoyed by both beginner hikers and casual visitors alike.
