A Winter Tradition: "Icicles"(tsurara) ❄️

Icicles(tsurara)... Such a beautiful word, isn’t it? Icicles form on rooftops and rocky surfaces during the cold winter, but did you know they can also serve as a hint for checking a house’s insulation? Icicles form when snow on the roof melts, drips down, and then refreezes. This means that houses with large icicles may have insufficient roof insulation, allowing heat to escape and melt the snow. In traditional Japanese houses, large icicles posed a risk of falling, so people took precautions by regularly removing them or adjusting sunlight exposure to prevent excessive formation.
