The Surprisingly Long History and Benefits of the Kotatsu!

When it comes to Japanese winter traditions, the kotatsu is a must! Surprisingly, the history of the kotatsu dates back to the Muromachi period (14th–16th century), when the first sunken kotatsu using charcoal was introduced. The style we see today, with a blanket draped over it, became popular during the Edo period (17th–19th century). Once you slip under a kotatsu, it’s hard to leave! But did you know it's also energy-efficient? Compared to air conditioning, it helps save on electricity costs. Spending a cozy winter under the kotatsu while eating mikan (Japanese mandarins) is a unique and heartwarming part of Japanese culture. 😊🍊
